A split day in May.

Posted on May 30 2018

With another hot, sunny, summer type day on tap I decided to do a day/night double header.

Spent the morning playing the big river 'bows to a standstill. Lost the last three in a row to end up at a fifty percent catch rate.  Saw three Green Drakes, one Isonicia, some caddis and a few olives. There were enough rises to locate fish and once I took the March Brown emerger off, most of them ate. There has been almost no wade fishing on the BR until the last few days and the boat traffic below Buckingham has been relatively light.  That said, all of the fish I caught (except for the lone brown) had multiple hook marks in their mouths.

Mowed the lawn (again) and took a short nap while the temp hit the high eighties and the gusty wind blew up the river.  Left the camp about 5:30 and stopped at my friend Ray's place on the WB to pick up one of my fly boxes that he had found on the stream bank.  Was sure it had floated down the river and was gone for good.  Thanks again Ray!

Left Ray's about 6:15 and stopped at a place above Hale Eddy where there were no boats or fishermen in sight.  Wind was still blowing up river at 15 mph or better, there were lots of Hendrickson nymph husks in the water,  Hendrickson duns floating on the surface, caddis everywhere and not a rise to be seen (for about half an hour). And then, with the sun off the water, the fish started to eat. If  the wind had laid down it might well have been an epic evening.  There were fish up everywhere.  Casting was difficult,  presentation "interesting",  dragging flies were the norm and indignant refusals common place.  Still, enough fish ate a fly with a hook in it to beat the morning catch by one and make it a "top ten day".

There are lots of fish everywhere in the river system, except perhaps, the Big East and the lower reaches of the Beaverkill (which I commented on yesterday).  The bugs hatching schedule this year is beyond my comprehension (who cares), come on out and enjoy the fun, there big fish to be thrown at everywhere.
