An Increased Release In August Is Seldom A Bad Thing

Posted on August 17 2025

If you are looking for something positive to pin your hopes on, the River Master started calling for increased releases from Cannonsville on Thursday. The releases are required to meet minimum flow requirements at  Montague down in Jersey. Why now? The additional flow is needed because the hydro generation at Wallenpaupack is not operating. When the power plant is shut down the additional water needed to meet minimum flow requirements comes from Cannonsville.

How does this affect the river system? While the additional releases are being made, the DEC will not have to use water from their "bank" to keep the temperature below 75 degrees at Lordville, which is a good thing.

The Wallenpaupack  reservoir is currently down to 1181.57 , (or lower), and no generation is scheduled for the coming week. The target level for September 1st is 1181.00  without substantial rainfall it looks like the increased Cannonsville flow will continue for at least a week and probably longer. The increased flow will cool the BR, and may even start some fish moving out of thermal refuges and back to their home pools. The increased flow and colder water may also perk up the daytime bug hatches.

I fished last night below hale eddy and had a pretty good night. I landed 2 16in brown trout that were wild. One almost got into my backing and jumped 3 times. There were no sulphers hatching but a few stragglers around. They were eating BWO sporadically and I saw my first Cahill. There were also more isos in the air and on the water.

Here’s a little info on lake wallenpaupack releases. If you go on their website safecwaters.com – Brookfield renewable which own the lake you can see the schedule for releases, what the current lake level is and what the level should be for each month of the year. The level for August 1st was 1183 and the level for September 1 is 1181. Right now the level is 1181.57 so they’ve stopped releasing as the month is only 1/2 way through and they’re almost at the September level – at least that’s how I see it. They don’t really manage releases for the fishermen which makes it pretty tough to fish the Lackawaxan during the season.
A119 thanks for your daily reports, l read them all the time.
