Don't Believe All Those Lies - - -

Posted on September 10 2025

A week ago there were all kinds of olives when the release from Cannonsville was up around 800. When the release was cut back to the mid 400's the bug activity, (at least where I fished), came to a screeching halt. The last two days the release has been between 475 and 525cfs and the olives have covered the water. There is no way to predict what the flows will be, the hydro at Wallenpaupack is running, there is no rain predicted in the ten day forecast and minimum flow has to be met.

The bright sunny days are better for golf than fishing, the smallest olives are hatching but the fish don't like the bright sun. The evenings, however, are getting exciting. Lots of olives and rising fish, mostly rainbows. Rainbows love to eat flies and you're as apt to hook the big ones as the yearlings.

Judging by the lack of "How I did" comments on the reports, not many of you are still fishing. If it's due to the gloom and doom report of September 2nd I understand, we aren't really into fall fishing yet, where the window for catching fish is 2:00 until 5:00 and it's pseudos only, but it's sorta like that. With bright sunny days, the only times to fish are early mornings, (tricos), and evenings. Right now evenings, (6:00pm until half an hour after dark,) are as good as it gets. Had an array of big feeding fish in front of me last night and just couldn't get it done.

How'd I do tonight? Hooking, an A, landing a B minus. Have been very careful with hooked fish the last few weeks and have landed most of them. Tonight I was three for seven before I righted the ship somewhat and landed the last two. Fished with seven-x and never broke off, lost a nice 'bow at the net, lost what seemed to be a foul hooked fish, and two others just came unstuck. Landed five fish with two rainbows one 17, the other 18 the picks of the litter.

If you come and it's sunny, do something else 'til 5:30.  When the sun is off the water there will be rising fish. Fish the last two or three hours of the day, find a slow water pool where you can see the rises, make the first cast count, if you hook one, play him carefully, every fish you catch right now is trophy worthy. If you come, tell us about it, right now Dennis feels he is the only one not catching fish.

Are you referring to Dean Martins version or Cliff Richards as to the blog title? Anyway..been up in Maine the last week (still in Portland and the craft beer is good) and ending in Massachusetts this weekend…never been to Maine and it is spectacular. Your comments keep me enthused for some fall fishing. I looked at the images of my two favorite streams on the USGS site and am sickened by the low water…absolutely will stay off those two rivers. Hopefully I’ll make it down for some West Branch fishing coming up…stay safe
