Don't Bug The One Bugger's.

Posted on April 25 2025

Today was not yesterday. That was evident right from the start. Chose a place a couple miles up river from yesterdays fish catching bonanza. Again, there were egg laying caddis and hatching caddis in good numbers, but the fish just didn't seem to want to play. You had to look for a rise, mark it, and then try to get within casting range. The wind was not a serious problem, but it didn't make accurate casting a walk in the park. Most casts were ignored, some refused and but five were eaten, all by rainbows, four of which came unstuck, (before reaching the net). Decided to look for greener pastures.

Drove up to the BK and watched the water flow by undisturbed by bugs or fish. Drove back down the BE until caddis started hitting the windshield, parked, walked in, and started fishing to fish eating apple caddis. Hooked three fish right off the bat. The first came unstuck making me one for six. Thankfully the next two fish played nice and ended up in the net. Cleaned off my fly, looked up and there was nothing, not a rising fish to be seen. Walked back to the car and headed for Lordville. Stopped at a couple places along the way, saw no bugs, talked with fishermen who thought three fish was a good day, and saw more cars and trailers parked at Stockport and Buckingham than I have ever seen before.

Clearly I'm at a loss for where to fish right now. Stopped on the Lordville Bridge, (are you supposed to capitalize the B in bridge?), and saw no one upstream and no fish rising downstream. Walked upstream and fished about an hour, saw a good number of Hendricksons and not a single rise until I was 20 feet from shore wading back to the car. Saw what appeared to be a good fish leisurely cruising around eating Hendricksons. Took half a dozen casts to get a fly in front of what turned out to be a day saving 20 inch brown.

If you come this weekend - I honestly haven't a clue. There are Hendricksons and caddis on the BR, but it's "one bug" weekend and because of the low water all of the boats in the tournament will there. There are caddis on the Lower WB and on the BE up to Fish's Eddy. There are very few boats on the WB, EB, BK, and the UEB. Everything is wade able. If Hendricksons decide to make an appearance, it could be fantastic. If the Hendricksons are no shows, you will earn every fish. Enjoy being here and at the end of the day, raise a glass, (no matter what's in it), to  the start of the new season.

I fished the Main Stem with my Brother in Law and was one of the cars you saw at Stockport.

It snowed Caddis from 8am to 7pm. No mayflies were seen all day. Just as you described, it was one and done most of the time. I caught two 18" Browns on a #16 tan Caddis. They made the mistake of rising more than once. Then at the end of the day a few started rising consistently and a #16 black Caddis got me the biggest fish I have yet to catch, a 21" brown.

It’s a very confusing system these days.

A119, thank you for another honest report. That nice brown at the end of the day was a just reward for all of the work you put in! Cheers to you!
