After taking two personal days, (high water and mid 90's temps), I was anxious to get back down to the Lordville Estate, if for no other reason than to cut the grass before the next deluge. Got the grass cut, put things away, had lunch, looked out at the bright sunshine, a thermometer that read 88 degrees and said, "Why in hell should I go out looking for fish now", (it was 2:15). Ordered a book of NYT medium crosswords which was in the mail box when I arrived, (along with a partially built Carolina wren's nest), with a couple of lucky guesses I got all but three blanks, (two words), filled, in and before I knew it, it was 4:15, (might have rested my eyes a bit during the puzzle).
With no further delays, I set out on a tour of the rivers. Drove up the PA side and there were no trailers at Buckingham, (and there shouldn't have been),well under 10 drift boats in sight on the WB, and half that number of wade fishermen on the entire system.
Wildlife - Stopped the car just downstream from Hale Eddy and put on the flashers as a wobbly legged fawn went almost 50 yards down the road in front of me before it found a gap in the guard rail and went off to find mom. At 9:38 when I headed for home there was a snake in the road and I never did determine if it was a rattler or not, backed up and it was gone. Encountered three baby bunnies, while on foot and saw more dead dear along the road than live ones.
The bugs - Keep in mind, this is from 4:15 until 9:38, saw a few bugs upstream from Deposit and not another bug until about 8:45. After that, the water was covered with bugs of every kind and color.
The fishing - Today, from 4:30 on I saw half a dozen rises, all upstream from Deposit on the WB, and a like number along the UEB. At 7:15 I was still undecided about fishing. Saw two rises, went back to the car, suited up, and I'm glad I did. Up until at least 8:45, there was nothing on the water, I know, I was there. Despite the absence of bugs I saw a few fish eating off the surface and of the five I cast at, four ate, (one refused), I managed to land two. After it got too dark to see, the bugs came, bugs of every size and type, duns and spinners, may flies, caddis, and the ones that get up your nose and under your glasses. I remembered to turn on the flashlight and look. The fish didn't need flashlights, they just started to eat. Hooked four more fish and landed three, the heart breaker being a big brown that I fought seemingly forever with fish gulping up flies all around me only to loose him with the net in one hand and the nail knot between the fly line and leader in the other. It was 9:38 when I got into the car.
The water and the temperature are droppin', but more rains a comin'.
I’m 72 and never posted anything before but I felt the need to tell you how much I look forward to and enjoy your reports. I fish the same river systems all the time so I can relate. I love the way you say it and I love the great info. Thanks and keep it up.
Has anyone tried the time from sunrise to 10 AM?
Thanks for the report. Night vision goggles or do they rely on infrared?
A119 sounds like a pretty good night!! It’s to bad you can’t have that action in the daylight. Thanks for the report
