I'd Rather Not Go To Montana.

Posted on June 27 2025

It's only 8:15 and I'm back at the Lordville Estate writing the fishing report, and it will be short. Drove up to Deposit around 12:30 to see if the Dorotheas were going, they weren't. Returned to the LVE without seeing a bug or a rise and but two waders and four boats.

At 4:00  I set out on an all river drive that even required a refueling stop. Saw a sulfur hatch above Corbett on the UEB but only yearlings up. Saw three wade fishermen on the drive up and on the way back there were five cars total at Powerline / Long Flat. No risers seen below the Corbett Bridge.

Drove up the BK until it was evident that there were neither bugs nor rising fish. Saw one fisherman.

Saw neither bugs, boats, rising fish or fishermen on the BR.

Took a long walk along the EB, saw what might have been a rise.

Returned to the Deposit area about 7:30 wind was blowing, saw 4 splashy rises in assorted places, and three Dorotheas blew by where I was standing. Parking lots empty. One boat in sight.

It's grim. The only fishing I've found lately is after 8:00pm.

On the bright side, there is a very good population of fish of ALL sizes in the river, (confirmed by Tim   Pokorny who is in charge of the DEC's shocking program). Normally the Dorotheas, (summer sulfurs) aren't due in Deposit until late in the first week of July. The high water has kept the freestones cooler and the fish are still occupying pools throughout the system. You can fish wherever you want.

Being a year of “big fish” down there, it might be cool to hear some stories of your biggest couple fish on the Delaware system. Anything particular or unusual about that season, or conditions surrounding the catches

Angler119’- Thanks for the report. I’m in Montana ( actually in Jacksonhole sightseeing as I’m typing this) Did a 1/2 float on the Madison with an old friend and the fishing was pretty good . My granddaughters first float and she loved it.As you noted in an earlier report , there were a lot of boats. To paraphrase Charlie Brooks”I hooked one and would have landed it-but I was using 5x”Back next week Good luck to all. Ed

Thanks for the reportA119. I talked to a guide yesterday and he had a sulfur hatch around noon yesterday on the west branch. Hopefully I’ll be on the water over the weekend

Thanks for the valuable insight. Looking forward to some cooler weather- The heat wave sure did put a hold on any meaningful day time fishing. I will be on the water the next few days and will report back my findings. When targeting risers eating sulfurs I always like to start with yellow, then will switch to orange or white, sometimes even brown… just my two cents on color. I’m curious what everyone else finds regarding color while trying to fool these persnickety fish. Thanks again for the report and see you on the water.
