Just Wishin' And Hopin' -

Posted on May 19 2026

Got a late start this morning what with having to drive into town to pick up provisions for the week and to continue the process, (started Saturday), of attempting to buy a new car. Was on 81 heading south a little after 10:00, arriving at the Lordville Estate just after noon. Would have stopped to check out the Hendricksons in the Deposit area but for the row of anchored boats stretching from the 17 bridge down to the Men's Club and the new bag of Hershey's Kisses in the back of the car that needed protection from the heat.

Had no intention of fishing the WB today, as I'd had two weeks of good fishing, mostly in the middle section, and had no desire to battle both drift boats and waders. Was two- thirty when I headed up Lordville Road. Car said it was 90 degrees and I thought the temp would drop when I got moving. It was up to 93 before I got to Hancock. I decided to drive back to Deposit and at least wade in cold water. After looking at the number of boats, fishermen, bugs on the water, (in the hot sun, they pop right off the water), and rising trout, (next to none), I got back on 17 and headed east.

Spent from 4:00 until 7:00 fishing two runs on the BK that were devoid of other anglers. One had no bugs hatching and yielded three fish, a brown, a rainbow, and a 10 inch brookie. The second had a nice hatch of March Browns, saw eight fish eat what I thought were MB emerging nymphs. The first riser I threw at was the village idiot, a hard fighting 15 inch brown with three fresh hook marks in his mouth. The other seven risers never acknowledged that I even had a fly on the end of the line. A nice rainbow did eat a blind cast.

From 7:00 until 8:45 I got what is commonly called an ass kicking. Saw neither bugs nor rising fish, the BK eagle that tried to eat two fish I hooked last year, lit in a tree across the river from me shortly after I arrived, half an hour later, he left. The toads were in full voice all day today, (you all know how much I love to hear the toads sing). Looked up at a waxing crescent moon snuggling up beside Venus as I walked back to the car, and thought, this is bill s---t, tomorrow I want bugs stuck to the water during the day and a big time spinner fall at night.

Jim D and Ed, good choice with Dusty, I would have went with Dionne Warwick. Good fishing too all.

Fished a couple of hours before work today. Mainstem in the area of Buckingham. Nice Hendrickson / March Brown spinner fall from about 6:30 / 7:30, 80% Hendricksons. I had some shade to fish after that. About 9AM the shade ran out, could not buy a fish after that. Things are setting up well for the drakes next week.

Jim D- Thanks, sometimes I just get lucky. You and Ron K are the masters. I’ll be up on the Willow/Bk Thursday afternoon and evening. If you’d like to meet up text me at 19736683410. Ed

The last couple nights the spent caddis fishing on the upper WB has been decent, but if last night was any indication they are waning.

Also, only one spinner in three nights.

I’m on the BK right now (9:15am) and have been since dawn. It’s been dead. No bugs, no risers.

Nothing deader than a dead brown trout stream…….

Correction from yesterday…..I believe the “golden eagle” I saw was a juvenile bald eagle, judging from the look it’s giving me now.

I fished the upper west yesterday and landed a couple 12 in fish. There were plenty of bugs and not a lot of action on top. I fished from 1:30-6pm. I had a few refusals also.
A119 when does the evening fishing pick up? I didn’t see a rise after 4:30. Adrian was in his spot at the red barn

Angler119’- The unusually high air temps, bright sun and pretty warm water temps make for very difficult fishing conditions. The cooldown on Thursday should perk things up. I’m going to give it try then and will report back. I feel like Dusty every time I’m on the water.Ed
