The Humbler

Posted on August 23 2022

Tonight I'm sitting here drinking a Perfect Manhattan and it's not a celebratory one. I would say I was drowning (just learned there's no d at the end of drown), my sorrows but Dennis would surely accuse me of mewling.

As an aside - My college freshman year English teacher had each of us write a five hundred word composition about our hand. She said she would mark off a grade for each misspelled word (this was before spell check or even computers for that matter - back then we were happy to have indoor plumbing and flush toilets). I got a D. How come? Misspelled the word thum. Didn't know there wasn't a " b" on the end of it. Thumb appeared 7 seven times in my essay and my grade plummeted from an A  all the way to a C-. Argued that I only spelled one word wrong but to no avail.

Spent some time today trying to write a spoof reply to the question Chris (notice how I avoided having to deal with the Chris possessive?) asked in "The Changes Keep On Changin" page. Didn't want to even try to answer the question but the title leapt out at me from Pinball Wizard. You guessed it "How Do You Think He Does It, What Makes Him So Good". Alas after three paragraphs I hit whatever it is that makes a page go poof and all illusions of being good disappeared. Tried Ctrl z but it didn't reappear - just as well as some things are better left unread..

The fishing - For me was just awful. From 3:00 until 8:30, I fished three places in the BR and two in the lower WB without seeing any bugs or risers until the last fifteen minutes when it was too dark to see the bugs. Put on a spinner and hooked six fish losing four of them mostly as a result of an over abundant supply of adrenalin. It seems that cutting back on the release raised the water temps downstream enough to put us back into summer fishing conditions (it is still August afterall). Until the releases increase it seems best to fish upstream of Hale Eddy.

If anybody got into bugs and rising fish please tell our readers about it.

A119 I am not that critical and for all the info you have shared I would give you one pass!!! I hope you enjoyed the Manhattan
I fished below hale Eddy yesterday and had a good day. I started at 12:30 and fish we’re rising everywhere. I hooked a nice rainbow and then a brown. 17 in. Unfortunately I had a small emergency at home and had to leave at 2. Fish we’re still rising all over. I caught the fish on BWO. Going again tomorrow.

The more I hear what people say and see how they act I realize why I, like you, like the solitude of fly fishing. I must not be a spring chicken anymore………

Angler119. Sounds like a difficult day . The water levels and down river temps keep on bouncing around . I’ll give it a try on Thursday and see what’s happening— or not happening. Thanks for The Who reference. Very cool

Forgot to mention I was fishing below Hale Eddy after the rain moved through.

Looks like you answered my question from yesterday… and didn’t have to come up with a catchy title. Thanks!
