Today, The Fragile Magic Was Gone.

Posted on May 21 2026

Frustrated by the trout's behavior during the Hendrickson hatch yesterday, I decided to spend the time more productively today. Jean reported, that it was raining in Lafayette while we were talking this morning. Told her, I had sunshine and 78 degrees. Knew the rain was coming so as soon as the sun got the grass reasonably dry, I fired up the mower. Managed to finish the job, put the mower away and get in the house before the first drops of rain hit.

My neighbor RJ is having a new roof put on his house. They got the old roof off and some of the support beams up yesterday. Today they finished the support beams, and got the plywood and what use to be called tar paper on before the rain. When I got back tonight I could see the bundles of shingles on the top of the roof. If you ever need a new roof these are the guys to call. They just never stopped working.

Left the fishing camp at 3:30 to pick up a couple items at the grocery store. Noticed on the way to the car that the air was chillier than this morning and went back for a second shirt. With the cooler temp and cloudy skies I drove over to the BK hoping to find Gray Foxes and Invaria hatching. Sat in the car streamside for 15 minutes without seeing a bug hatch or a fish rise and headed back to the WB in anticipation of fishing another caddis spinner fall.

The fishing - Be in the right place just one time, and you swell up like a hot air balloon, sure you're both the smartest and best fisherman on the planet. Rest assured, you are neither, I know from a lifetime of experiences. Fished four places, the first of which had a modest number of bugs, both mayfly duns and caddis spinners, caught three rainbows, (10, 10, and 13), then left, (like Scuffy the Tugboat, I was meant for bigger things). Second place had nary a bug or a rising fish. Third place had a very few bugs  and even fewer rising fish, (hooked two and landed one 16 inch brown). The fourth place, clearly an act of pure desperation, had neither bugs nor rising fish.

Fishing success depends, to a great deal, on the anglers skills, the guide or anglers knowledge of the river being fished, and the way Mother Nature deals the cards. Today my best move would have been to fold.

I think Mr Buffet would say to double down….don’t fold. The house will not win!

Fished a long hard day on the WB yesterday. Even tried to outlast the mid-afternoon rain. Fished until dark. Saw blue quill, Hendricksons, apple caddis, an caddis, bwo on the water. Rising was scarce to sporadic most of the day. Activity increased toward dark. A single 11” brown kept the skunk away.

I fished the mid WB and had caddis from 1:30 till 7pm. There were spotty risers all the time I was there. I netted 3 fish all 12 inchers. I had 10 refusals. It was fun casting at rising fish even though they weren’t eating consistently. There were a bunch of boats and all were all respectful of my presence in the water. I did not see many other bugs
    On the water.

Yesterday afternoon and evening on the BK, BE and UE were poor.

The UE had a few bugs and rising fish but wading into position to get a good presentation with these flows was a dicey proposition.

Fished the BK this am (quiet) and spoke to a couple of people who fished the BK last night who said the same thing.

Today looks like a good day to fish. Hopefully the rain predicted for the weekend stays south.

I was on the bk the last 2 days, the Horton area Tues was devoid of surface activity Tuesday. Went to Roscoe wiggled my way into a spot, fish came up at about 730 and ended up with a 17” at dark. Rally weren’t a lot of fish rising was was thrilled when I kind casted my rusty spinner and a fish porpoises completely out of the water to eat it.
Prosspecrted before the rain yesterday and no bugs or fish anywhere I was. Rain stopped at 430 I went to where I was Tuesday Expecting bugs and fish. Sporadic random bugs coming off, one fish rising. Waited until dark and barely any fish came up although there were bugs. Managed a 15” on a spinner in the dark, and a 10” brown. Out of the 7 people fishing the stretch only one other hooked a fish. Disappointing
