We are really lucky to have an incredible run of Dolly Varden at Alaska West. Guests who target our dollies have an absolute blast – here are 4 reasons we think you should do just that.
- Very, very high numbers. Our run of dollies is ridiculously big – there are enough in our rivers that it’s really fair to say that ‘you can catch as many as you want’. Whether you’re a new angler or a kid, or you just want to have a blast catching lots and lots of fish, dollies are your friends!
- They’re getting bigger. Don’t ask us why, but they’ve steadily been getting bigger over the past 5 years or so. A 24″ dolly barely pings the ‘big fish’ meter at dinner these days; 5 years ago we would have practically put up a plaque.
- They eat swung flies on the surface. In other breaking dolly fishing news…a few of our guides have figured out some really cool ways to catch dollies on the surface. Think switch rods…spey casts…waking action…numbers…it’s pretty neat.
- They look cooler as time goes on. We admit that we’re pretty stuck up about our chrome salmon…with dollies it’s just the opposite. Catch ‘clowned up’ dollies in their spawning colors late in the season and you’ll see some of the most beautiful fish in the world.
