Week 9 saw the return of the Bruce Cook group from Southern California. Bruce Cook Sr, grandson Chandler, Bob Anderson, Roger Rhoades and Larry Ryan always bring a great attitude and the fire to fish hard all week. Unfortunately, Bruce Jr could not make it this year, but vowed to return next year to make up for it.
We also welcomed back a bunch of guys through Trout Unlimited. Dave Groff, Dave Oesting, Doug Barry and Ed Pettigrew made up about half the TU group with newbies Warren Colyer, Walle Ralkowski, Steven Medwell, Bill Levin and Bill Lewis rounding out the rest of the group. Darrel and Eileen Sickmon also came back again for another go at the Kanektok river treasures. This week saw the return of our longtime Alaska West family member and Artist in Residence, Ed Novinsky. It’s always a pleasure to have him join us for dish duty, and maybe a little fishing.
The salmon fishing was quite good this week with guests working the highest tides of the month for chrome madness. Big tides equaled even bigger pushes of silvers on a daily basis. Silver fishing was as crazy as ever with anglers able to limit out in minutes if willing. Lots of popper action this week along with the nuttiest wet fly fishing on the planet. Silvers cannot get enough pink and as long as you threw it this week you could not be denied salmon eating your fly.
Trout and dolly fishing was just as good as the salmon fishing so no matter what species you were after it was nuts! We also saw some pretty cool action on Grayling which normally don’t make the news. Good dry action for dollies and grayling and even a few rainbows made for happy anglers.
The weather this week was just about average for this time of the season. It was a mixed bag of weather overall, though we only saw the sun for a very short time. More prevalent was the clouds, some rain and even a bit of wind early in the week. It was fine since the cool weather kept the bugs at bay for one more week.
