Alberta Looks at Cutthroat Recovery

As Dawn Walton writes in this morning’s Globe and Mail, once-numerous native cutthroat trout populations are getting new attention from Canadian biologists, who are proposing everything from fishing bans to dam removal to bring the species back.

“According to [aquatic ecologist David] Mayhood’s research, thousands of kilometres of rivers and streams were once teeming with hundreds of populations of cutthroat. There are now perhaps a dozen – each with 30 to 200 adult fish – of genetically pure specimens passing through maybe 100 kilometres of Alberta’s waterways….”
