Shaking up conventional belief and previous observations, Donald Stewart, a fisheries professor at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), has published his research findings in a recent issue of the journal Copeia, describing sub-species of the arapaima, the world’s largest freshwater fish. “People have been thinking it’s all one species so it doesn’t matter where you move them,” explains Stewart. But “We need to figure out the taxonomy so we can know what to protect and what to eat, and so people won’t move them around in ways that cause new, unanticipated problems.” Via National Geographic.
