Australia’s Mighty Murray Cod

Australia is known for its many predators, such as snakes, spiders and sharks, just to name a few. But to anglers, the predator of most interest, is the carnivorous and apex predator of our south-east freshwater streams and lakes – The Mighty Murray Cod.

The Murray cod is the largest exclusively freshwater fish in Australia, and one of the largest in the world. Known to grow longer than 1.5 meters and weigh over 200 pounds, they are a popular angling target. Long pursued by bait and spin anglers, fly fisherman have also started to turn their attention to this amazing species.

Although, Murray Cod don’t have a reputation as extremely hard fighters, their initial hit, can be explosive. A large surface fly popped across the water can quickly be demolished without any warning. If you manage to keep the fish away from likely snags, you become the winner. But if you are not careful, a big bulldozer Cod can have you tied up under a log in no time.

Murray Cod are a majestic looking fish: the green to yellow colors covered in a myriad of black markings leave a striking impression.I was first convinced to start targeting them on fly by a lure fisherman eighteen months ago. “If they can do it, I can do it” I thought. Cod often inhabit beautiful gorge-like country, and every expedition has proved to be the ultimate adventure.  We throw large flies into likely water, and have at times been lucky enough to sight cast to large cruising fish. An 8-10 weight rod is essential to cast the large flies that resemble anything from fish, yabbies, lizards, mice or even birds! Cod can be extremely fickle at times, but when the hit does come, it’s worth it. Several times I have been saturated by a splash of water as a fish exploded onto the fly close to my feet!

Murray Cod have survived through poor fishing practices, loss of habitat and overfishing. Now considered as a threatened species, new catch limits are in place and there is a greater awareness of the need to protect their habitat. Catch and release is strongly encouraged, and now is a great time to add this predatory fish to your bucket list. Numbers are on the rise, and the mighty Murray cod is rightfully claiming its place as Australia’s greatest freshwater sport fish.
