It's been just over a week since I left Beaver Island on the annual carp (and a whole lot else) junket with the fellows from Indigo Guide Service but with everything that is happening around me and in the media, it feels like it's been months ago already. Can I just press fast forward to a few days of peace again?
Beaver Island is a place like none other. Captain Kevin Morlock described it best that Beaver Island is one of the last "real places". Sure, tourists coming over on the plane and ferry put quite a few dollars in the local economy but Beaver Island is for Beaver Island first. St. James has just enough of everything to cover the bases but in reality it's a sleepy hamlet where it's kind of tough to keep up with what's going on in the world. Your mobile phone hardly works, internet is spotty at best, and it might be one of the best places to unplug.
Leaving Beaver Island always brings on a slight depression and one that I try to shake on the full day drive home to South Carolina. Remember when you were a kid and on the day after Christmas you didn't quite know what to do or obsess about next? That thing that you thought about so damn much had passed and now what? Well, now it's back to the grind with taking on projects that have been on the back burner, stacks of paperwork, answering emails and phone calls, meetings and meetings about meetings. In the back of my mind I am already thinking about next summer and another week on the island. It's only fifty or so weeks away.
Over the coming days I'll be highlighting this year's trip with a series of posts, a few words, and a mix of photographs. There were six of us (and three guides) on this trip and everyone had an opportunity to fish with each other, enjoy time in the evenings to decompress, and a couple weather days where we found ours busy with just taking it easy. Certainly not a bad way to spend a week and I'm ready to go back right now.
