Yesterday was a good day for working outside and I took some time to install the Big Sky Rod Box Sculpin to the Yakima bars of our aging, but ever ready, Honda Element. At over 253,000 miles it just keeps going and going.
I've been wanting a rod box of some sort for several years and the Big Sky Rod Box won out due to how it's constructed with 18 gauge powder coated steel, lockable, and I really like how it lifts open instead of running fly rods down a tube. I choose the Sculpin model since I don't mind breaking my fly rods down in half for transport and I don't have a vehicle right now that I can run a nine and a half foot box on anyways. The Sculpin is only 5 1/2 foot long and will hold four fly rods with reels attached.
All in all the installation process is pretty damn easy and after moving the Yakima Gear Basket over a few inches, I just needed to mark where where I needed to drill holes for the u bolts. Drilling holes on anything expensive is a little nerve wracking but it worked out fine in this case.
I'll let the photos walk you through the installation process step by step. If you have any questions let me know.
Visit the Big Sky Rod Box website to see the various rod box models and other accessories.
The Sculpin is currently sold out at the moment but should be in stock soon. Use the Contact page to put your name on one if you are interested in placing an order.
