Favorite Bonefish Rod Roundup

Posted on May 29 2009

My, what a fast-action rod you have.

Our ‘favorite trout rod‘ poll a couple of weeks ago delivered some pretty interesting results, and when we asked for votes on folks’ favorite bonefish rods, we got some great input once again.

Which Brand?

Brand loyalty is strong in fly fishing.  As was the case in the trout rod poll, Sage comes out on top in the bonefish rod division.

What Weight?

Looks like the 8 weight remains the standard for bonefishing.  Note: as moderators in these polls we don’t vote, but if we did our vote would have been for a 7 weight, since we have so many short shots on South Andros.

  • 8 – 77.8%
  • 7 – 11.1%
  • 6 – 11.1%

Currently Available?

The big shocker in the trout rod poll was that most anglers’ favorite rods can’t be purchased today in a retail outlet.  That’s not the case with bonefish rods.  Don’t worry – we’ll rant and rave below.

  • Yes – 60%
  • No – 40%

Commentary

Today’s trend in the fly rod world seems to be that faster, lighter rods are a good thing.  The results of our trout rod poll run counter to that trend – our readers like trout rods that have more moderate action and a lot of feel, and that makes sense for trout fishing.

Anglers who chase bonefish apparently view things a little differently.  On the flats of the Bahamas or the Keys or Belize, anglers spend a lot of time with a rod in their hand, and they’re constantly battling wind and wary fish and potentially long shots.  This is where modern technology shines, according to our very scientific poll.

Call to Action

Attention fly rod manufacturers!  When it comes to bonefishing, we think you’re doing a pretty good job.  Keep delivering us light, fast, accurate bonefish rods and we’ll stay pretty happy.

Trout rods are another matter, of course.

Thanks!
