Last week we told you about Maxima’s Sharktooth Line Management System; one of our favorite ways to tame unruly leader and tippet material. However, with five species of salmon, trout, dolly varden/char, and grayling roaming around our waters (sometimes all at the same time), we tend to carry a whole bunch of different leader and/or tippet material with us on the water.

Therefore, consolidating leader and tippet material in an organized fashion can also be super helpful. After all, the more time you spend looking for the right tippet, the less time your fly spends actually attached to tippet, where it can spend time catching fish..

To keep our tippet tidy, we recently picked up a couple of Fishpond’s Headgate Tippet Holders. We’ve been using them for a while now and we really dig them, so today we thought we’d tell you why.

Fishpond Headgate Tippet Holders

As you might expect, the Headgate Tippet Holder is not an overly complex piece of fishing gear, which might be what we like about it most. Quite the contrary, a simple spring loaded gate allows for spools to be added/removed with ease and the straight bar construction allow tippet spools to turn freely when pulled, keeping them from binding up against neighboring spools.

Because of its rigid aluminum frame, spools are also not jostled around as easily which we think is a common culprit of tippet being pulled from the spool unintentionally (particularly with tippet tenders made from flexible materials). Could you ‘hold’ tippet spools just the same with a piece of paracord a carabiner? Sure you could, but we’d argue that you’d eventually end up with a tangled mess.

It also comes in two great sizes; the original Headgate Tippet Holder which holds up to seven standard freshwater tippet spools (rubber washers work to hold spools tightly when not full), as well as the Headgate Tippet Holder XL model which fits large maxima and saltwater tippet spools like a glove (something we use a lot of at our lodges).

Plus, the original model even features an attached tippet cutter which does a fine job in a pinch to cut most 0x-6x tippets.

The Headgate Tippet Holder has tidied up our boat bags more than ever before, and we’d expect they could do the same for you too. It retails for $19.95 – $29.95 (Large and Extra Large model, respectively) and can be found at your nearest Fishpond dealer.
