Getting Started with Steelhead

Posted on November 03 2011

Roger Phillips offers some excellent advice for those yearning to feel the yank of a steelhead on a fly rod. Start with small rivers, he says, and learn to read the water: “The basic rule of thumb for fly anglers is to look for water that’s shin deep to waist deep and moving about walking speed. Steelhead tend to shun an even, uniform river bottom, so look for structure such as rocks, riffles, trenches, and other features.” In the Bellingham Herald.
