When the video above appeared on YouTube on Saturday, it generated praise for the kayaker who rescued the dog in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico off Sarasota, Florida. But there was also an element of mystery: Why was the dog swimming in open water? How had it received the many wounds on its body? And why was the poor animal so terrified?
