How to Fin Clip a Bonefish.
In case you needed another reason to catch bonefish. Photo: BTT Video.

Earlier this spring, we told you about the Bonefish Genetics Program – A three year study conducted by the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust to better understand how bonefish in different locations are related.

Surprisingly enough, the large scale life history of bonefish is still not widely understood, and the information gained from this study could actually help protect our beloved bonefish throughout the Caribbean and Western Atlantic.

However, in order for the program to work, they need your help! What do you have to do? Well, you’re going to have to go fishing.. We know, we know, science is tough. Then, once you catch a bonefish, simply take a quick length measurement and fin sample from the fish’s tail.

To make this extremely simple, the good folks at BTT made a great video on how to collect fin samples for the program. According to BTT, the method used in the video helps to limit air exposure and is completely harmless to the fish. Plus, the small section of the tail taken for the sample actually grows back in roughly two weeks! Anyone can participate, just check out the video below for the details.
