400,000 troops with hand grenades seem to think so. Indian troops fighting separatists in the Kashmir region, an area reknowned for trout fishing ever since the British began introducing rainbow trout in 1900, are supplementing their diets with huge quantities of fish killed with explosives, chemicals, and electric shock. It’s a major blow to the region’s tourism industry. “For decades trout fishing has been one of Kashmir’s most successful industries, attracting anglers to some of the wildest, most secluded and cheapest beats in the world.” Dean Nelson in London’s Sunday Times.
