Yesterday the children and I spent a couple hours at a friend's pond that seems to be completely full of hand sized and larger bluegills that just fall over themselves to gobble up a cricket. The two dads could hardly keep crickets on the hooks as all four children were in constant action catching fish after fish. It wasn't long and we'd caught three or four dozen fish with a few coming home with us for dinner.
I have a feeling that Hadley and I are going to spend a lot of time this summer fishing and practicing her fly casting. She really has the interest to learn and I am going to do whatever possible to foster it.
Dads make good "Cricket Sherpas".
Otis didn't know what to think about the bluegills and wanted to play or bite at them as soon as they surfaced.
Finn really had a good time catching and fighting a few fish and it's really neat to see him get excited about fishing.
A few dispatched bluegills in the YETI Coolers Roadie on ice with a few brews to keep them company.
This little turtle was seriously second guessing his decision to eat the cricket. It's kind of amazing how fierce turtles can be when you're trying to get one off the hook. A lot of hissing, snapping, and claws.
This dad had to get his fix too and I spent just a few minutes with the Schliske Bamboo built Steffen Brothers 5'6" 1/2 weight and picked off a couple spunky bluegills on flies. This little fly rod is absolutely perfect for the pursuit of bluegills.
The day ended with a feast of slow cooked white and yellow grits with tomato gravy and a few bluegill filets and tater sauce. It's tough to beat a meal like this.
