#OptOutside

Turkey-day weekend can produce big sales for both the Wallmarts of the world and specialty retailers riding the Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday hoopla all the way to the bank. This year, however, many businesses are throwing up the closed signs. Patagonia joins the list of more than 50 national retailers shuttering their doors on Thanksgiving, while Outdoor Research and REI are taking the added step of closing the day after Thanksgiving. REI started its #OptOutside campaign last year and, for 2017, American Rivers is partnering with the retail chain to encourage spending time on or near free-flowing water rather than throwing elbows and fighting traffic at the mall.

Meanwhile, anglers in Oregon who’d rather be outside can take advantage of waived parking and day-use fees the day after Thanksgiving thanks to parks and recreation offering what it calls “a more natural—and healthier—alternative to the American retail holiday.”
