Portage Creek Cleanup

Posted on May 03 2007

Norfolk Southern, whose driver caused a massive spill of sodium hydroxide into Sinnemahoning-Portage Creek near Gardeau, Pennysylvania last summer (see “Toxic Rail Spill in Pennsylvania Caused By Excessive Speed“), claims to have spent more than $2 million dollars in its effort to clean up the streambeds in the area. “Norfolk Southern also explained that studies of aquatic invertebrates in Portage Creek demonstrate that the ‘stream has recovered sufficiently to attain EV (Exceptional Value) and CWF (Cold Water Fishes) protected use within the designated stream reaches.'” Marcie Schellhammer in The Bradford Era.
