Theaux Le Gardeur is more than a riverkeeper — he’s also the owner of Backwater Angler in Hereford, Maryland. But the 40-year-old Louisiana native and marine scientist is committed to protecting the Gunpowder River and water-quality issues generally, and as Pat van den Beemt says in North County News, leverages his “extra eyes on the water” to feed the passion.
“‘Theaux took it on himself to maintain 12 wash stations,’ said Ronald Klauda of the Department of Natural Resources at the awards ceremony. ‘He really has a concern for Maryland’s natural resources.’ Le Gardeur and his dog make the rounds of each wash station weekly, lugging in salt and making sure wash pans have fresh water.”
