Five years ago Redington debuted the Butter Stick series of fiberglass fly rods and for the past year or so their fly rod designers been working on the next generation, complete with new models, tapers and aesthetics which debuted at iCAST a couple of weeks ago. The previous Butter Stick fly rods had been offered in six models from two weight to five weight and will now offer seven models from one weight to five weight along with (much requested) six and eight weight models as well.
For the last few months I've been messing around with a couple of the six and eight weight prototypes (along with an early production eight weight that went to Beaver Island with me) and I've been very impressed with the new Butter Stick fly rods. Where the first generation of Butter Stick fly rods were good and checked off a box that Redington offered glass, this new series takes all of it steps forward with a lot more imagination and focus on details. I really like the retro paint job on the blanks and I'm especially geeked about the unique cork shapes and reel seat hardware. I also like that they've kept all these fly rods on the short side of the spectrum from the 5'9" 1 weight to the 8' 6 and 8 weights. I continue to think that shorter is better in glass.

Until then, maybe start figuring out which Redington fly reel you'd match with your new Butter Stick. Start with the ZERO (in Dreamcicle of course) and be sure to check out the new GRANDE as well for the six and eight weight.
