Smiling sculpin
Sculpins make us happy. Photo: Jason Whiting.

Sculpins are an important food source for our resident rainbow trout at Alaska West. We spend a great deal of time at the tying bench trying to imitate the appearance of these fat headed bait fish as closely as possible. Why? Because the trout love ’em! Particularly during the beginning and end of the season.

When tying on a sculpin pattern however, many of our guests ask us ‘what exactly does a sculpin look like?’ So today we thought we’d share with you one of the best mugshots of a sculpin we’ve ever seen, taken by Alaska West guide, Jason Whiting. We’re not exactly sure how he got him to smile, be we’re glad he did..
