Steelhead/Rainbow Interbreeding More Common Than Thought

In the Audubon magazine blog, Nick Steely reports that not only do a large portion of steelhead genes in Hood River trout come from rainbow trout parents, but that very few genes are contributed by hatchery fish, “which highlights that these wild, resident trout are really important as a genetic buffer for the entire steelhead population.”
