Tippets: Florida’s Red Tide, Gov. Walker Urges Suspension of Pebble Mine Project, Fish Farms to Require First Nations Approval

Posted on July 04 2018

  • An aggressive red tide bloom in the waters of Southwest Florida has killed thousands of fish. “The ongoing red tide is a sign of the ‘new normal’ in Southwest Florida because too many nutrients are entering Florida’s estuaries and coasts due to water mismanagement,” reports the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust. • Alaska Governor Bill Walker has written a letter to the Army Corp of Engineers, urging them not to advance an environmental review of the Pebble Mine project. “Given the unique characteristics of the region,” writes Walker, “the mine proposed by Pebble Limited Partnership must be held to an extraordinarily high standard.” In an artile for KTVA, Liz Raines writes “Gov. Walker says the project should first demonstrate to Alaskans that it is both feasible and realistic.”
  • Starting in 2022, all fish farms on the west coast of British Columbia will be required to have First Nations approval before their tenure is renewed. “This new approach will enable us to advance toward reconciliation with First Nations, protect wild salmon and strengthen our coastal communities,” said Agriculture Minister Lana Popham on Wednesday in Victoria.
