Tippets: Upslope Brewing Supports Watersheds, FishFace Software, Rescuing Golden Trout, Facing Floods

Posted on October 19 2016

  • Because snowmelt is always their first ingredient, Upslope Brewing Company responsibly supports the protection of local watersheds by donating 1% of the sales from their Craft Lager to Trout Unlimited.  A recent video highlights their conservation message and work.
  • FishFace, a new application being development by The Nature Conservancy and Refind Technologies, will use artificial intelligence to learn to recognize fish species in photographs and will help gather real-time data on species at risk. FishFace will function in a similar way to facial recognition software used to identify people. Via The Nature Conservancy.
  • Due to decreasing habitat, biologists recently rescued a population of golden trout from small streams in the high Sierra. Currently being held at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, “The hope is that the fish will be returned to their natural environment in a year or when their habitat becomes suitable and stable,” writes Brian Hickey via KCRA.
  • A predicted future of increasingly severe storms is of concern for salmon populations of the Pacific northwest. New research published in the journal Global Change Biology examines how salmon will fare with larger and more regular flood events.
