Bonefishing Mistakes
You didn’t bring enough flies. Joking, just joking! Photo: Gabe Nyblad

Following on the heels of our roundup a couple weeks back about what not to do when you go fishing, we figured we’d run through the 5 mistakes that we see made most often on bonefishing trips.  Learn from the travails of others!

Top 5 Mistakes Made on Bonefishing Trips

  1. You didn’t practice your casting before the trip.  Yes, we’ve covered this before and we’re going to continue covering it until we’re blue in the face.  The first tee at Pebble Beach is not the place to practice your drive.  You don’t have to be an expert, but just a few minutes a day for a few days before the trip will work wonders.
  2. You missed a spot with the sunscreen.  Spend a little extra time in the morning making sure that you go overboard with the sunscreen – we don’t want to you be uncomfortable for the first few days.  Better yet – leave as little skin as possible exposed so you don’t need much sunscreen to start with.
  3. You didn’t drink enough water.  Drinking lots of water is the best way to make sure you stay on top of your game, especially if you like to enjoy a round or two at the tiki bar in the evening.  A few liters a day is good.
  4. You made too many false casts.  Hooray, an actual fishing mistake!  Being fast is much more important than being long.  Make as few false casts as possible (zero and one are great numbers), and get it in the ballpark quickly.
  5. You trout set.  You could practically write a book about this one, but our best advice is to keep the rod tip in the water and keep stripping until the line comes tight.
