The author recounts 14 seasons of camping next to pool on a tributary to the fabled North Umpqua River, literally standing guard with his dog, Sis, over 400-600 summer steelhead, protecting them from poachers. Poachers have, apparently, been known to dynamite this pool. It’s a great work on natural history, like a Walden for modern times, with a bit of a fly-fishing bent. (Patagonia, $27.95)
