I am a big believer in fishing in the rain. This past summer a friend and I watched a storm emerge over mountains west of Yellowstone National Park. As the storm arrived, so did active fish and hit after hit. While others were peeling off of the river and heading to cars, we stayed on the water and caught numerous fish. In order to fish in the rain, though, you need the right kind of gear.
The Grundens Stormlight jacket is a great summer rain shell. Fully waterproof, it features an adjustable hood and adjustable sleeve cuffs which both worked well to form a tight seal and keep water out.
The jacket is cut well and roomy, and caused no issues with moving about or casting. Made of nylon neo-stretch material, the jacket breathes well. In addition, zippered vents under the arms made cooling down a snap in warm, humid weather. Two zippered pockets are found one on each side of the chest, which I used to store a slim line fly box, a container of gink and extra tippet easily.
Best of all, the jacket is simply sharp looking. It wears equally well, going in to town for dinner as it does on the stream. The Grundens Stormlight jacket is a great way to stay on the water and catch fish when inclement weather arrives, and to look good doing it. $179.99; grundens.com.
