AFFTA Sends Letter to President Obama
Posted on February 06 2014
AFFTA recently sent the attached document to President Obama and EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy asking them to use their power to stop Pebble Mine now. Here it is in it’s entirety.
Jan. 29, 2014
To: President Barak Obama
From: The American Fly Fishing Trade Association
CC: Administrator Gina McCarthy, Environmental Protection Agency
Re: Pebble Mine, Bristol Bay, Alaska
Dear Mr. President:
As the industry association representing hundreds of fly fishing manufacturers, retailers, guides, outfitters and dealers from coast to coast, the American Fly Fishing Trade Association respectfully asks you to use existing provisions within the Clean Water Act to proactively prohibit the development of Pebble Mine in Alaska.
Our members have a keen understanding of the relationship between intact fish and game habitat and sporting opportunity—and the economic impact that relationship generates, both in Bristol Bay, Alaska, and across the nation. Simply put, Pebble would destroy more than 90 miles of high-quality salmon spawning and rearing streams and put hundreds more miles of fishable salmon waters in peril for years and years to come. It’s too risky, and our members vehemently oppose the development of this mine in this location.
Section 404(c) of the Clean Water Act allows the Environmental Protection Agency to prohibit development in sensitive watersheds, like the Bristol Bay watershed in southwest Alaska. This watershed is home

The House and Senate Advance Legislation for Sportsmen and Women
Posted on February 06 2014
From ASA:
Today the House of Representatives, in a bipartisan vote, passed the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act, SHARE Act (H.R. 3590). While in the Senate, Sens. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) introduced the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2014 (S. 1996). Both packages support increased access for recreational opportunities across the nation as well as the protection of our fishing and shooting heritage.
“The bipartisan vote in the House and bipartisan set of sponsors in the Senate highlight how conservation issues that impact sportsmen and women can cut through partisan politics,” said American Sportfishing Association (ASA) Vice President Gordon Robertson.

Trout Unlimited applauds House passage of Farm Bill Conference Report
Posted on February 04 2014

Trout Unlimited congratulated the House today for voting to reauthorize the Farm Bill and helping to keep trout and salmon resource conservation efforts in place across the nation. The House voted 251-166, in a strongly bipartisan vote, to approve bill produced by a House-Senate conference committee last week.
“We commend the House for its vote today, and we especially laud the remarkable work of the House-Senate Conference Committee which produced the new bill last week,” said Steve Moyer, TU’s vice president for Government Affairs. “The Conference Committee faced a number of major challenges with the bill. But House Agriculture Committee Chair, Frank Lucas (R-OK), Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Ranking Members Representative Colin Peterson (D-MN) and Senator Thad Cochran (R-MI), and all of the Committee members, have done outstanding work. The House approved bill is a masterpiece of effective compromise.”
