And The Winners Are…

Jim Bartschi, President of Scott Rods is all smiles after wining both – Best salt water rod & Best of Show categories with the new Scott Meridian.
People often ask me how I feel about the state of the fly-fishing market. There’s no easy answer for such a complex question. But here’s some food for thought. One of the most reliable indicators of the “health” of the industry is on display, once a year, at the International Fly Tackle Dealer trade show, in the form of the New Product Showcase. I’ve seen the tide ebb and flow. “Up” years indicate that the manufacturers are investing in research and product development. Some companies (usually the big ones) make that a priority all the time. But the companies that are living hand-to-mouth don’t have that luxury. They must make money to invest, and so on.
This year’s New Product Showcase featured nearly 250 products, literally hundreds more than I have seen in the past. It was an impressive collection of very sound, smart designs. The big hitters like Far Bank, Orvis, and Simms went large. Pure Fishing is pressing reintroductions of icons like the Pflueger Medalist reel, and Fenwick (and Hardy) rods. And a number of smaller, niche players really made statements. That tells me the doldrums from a few years ago are gone, and there is optimism xanax no prescription pharmacy looking forward. You have good reason, as a retailer, to share that optimism, and check these things out.
Here are the winners, in every category from the show:
The AT Ballot: Six Products that Got Our Vote
Posted on July 17 2015
1. Best Saltwater Fly Rod: Scott Meridian. Clearly a game changer. Been fishing with it for a month. It’s an incredible mix of power and feel, which isn’t easy to pull off in a salty rod. The counterpart to the Radian upholds the standard and was worth the wait.
2. Best Freshwater Fly Rod: Sage MOD. Moderate action. Somewhere between the ONE and the Circa, using the company’s Konnetic technology. The exact right action for most trout situations. A masterpiece.
3. Best Waders: Simms “Warriors & Quiet Waters” models. Significant proceeds go to support an extremely important cause. We need more cause-related marketing like this, and we salute Simms.
4. Best Freshwater Reel. Orvis Hydros. Great finish. Great aesthetic design. Great pricepoint. Really, really great sales potential. Should be an automatic.

More Random Thoughts from IFTD
Posted on July 17 2015

As the International Fly Tackle Dealer Show winds down here in Orlando, I’m left thinking the following.
I complained to my family, my friends, and colleagues aloud about having to schlepp it down to Orlando in the middle of July. Too hot. Too sticky. I couldn’t imagine a place I would want to leave home base in Colorado less to visit, other than, perhaps, Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
As it turned out, I spent an epic day of fishing out of Jupiter the day before the show, thanks to GoPro, Costa, YETI, and Simms. I then had the three most productive work days of the year, and am leaving with strong plans for 2016. I saw old friends. Got stuff done, and I am looking forward to next year.
The point being, you need to be here. Fly fishing is a family. This is the family reunion. I know it’s a big ask to
The Bahamas Situation
Posted on July 17 2015

IFTD meeting among lodge owners, travel companies, and representatives from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.
Charlie Smith, inventor of the famous “Crazy Charlie” bonefish fly, is often credited with putting Bahamian flats fishing on the map for many Americans. Apparently, his son, Prescott, might ultimately be credited for taking it off the map, at least for do-it-yourself anglers.
The proposal to limit foreign lodge ownership, shut down DIY angling (which accounts for 60 percent of the fishery related economy) spearheaded by Prescott Smith and other Bahamian guides, is still very much alive. Now it is headed to a vote by the government.
At a meeting at IFTD among lodge owners, travel companies, and representatives from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, there was some hope that cooler, more rational heads would prevail on this issue.
As AT stated before, we can understand the beef some Bahamian guides have. Some changes may well be in order. A license fee, for example is something most visiting anglers would gladly pay. But this could have a devastating effect on the angling tourism trade in that part of the world.
For the most reasoned, carefully thought commentary and recommendations on the matter, we suggest following the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust. Here’s what BTT says on the matter now:
