A Sweet Little Rosebud

Rose and her sister Blaze were only about six weeks old when they were found as strays, and brought to the Fluvanna SPCA in Troy, VA. The street is no place for little ones! Although they were sweet and affectionate, it's hard to put your best paw forward when you're covered with fleas and ticks! But their luck was about to change...

Exploratory Steelhead in British Columbia Part 2Okay, here we go...

Exploratory Steelhead in British Columbia Part 2
Okay, here we go with the fish pix. As guests of our friend Will (who
also kindly took these photos), and the Heiltsuk First Nation, Yvon and
I knew there was some self-imposed pressure on our hosts. No matter how
much we told them we were just happy to be there to experience the
place (and we were), I think anyone who invites fishermen to their home
waters wants to show them how good it can be. We were more than happy to
oblige, and fortunately, the steelhead were as well. That’s Yvon taking
some pressure off Will by putting the pressure on our first fish.
The fish we found were mostly in pools that don’t even exist on a high
tide. Instead of long, meandering, silt-bottomed tidal pools, these
rivers are filled with great structure and big rocks in tidewater. When
the tide recedes, the pools reveal themselves, along with some very
aggressive fish. Not a lot, but enough to reload the good water, and
with nobody else fishing, we were able to take full advantage.
Another interesting discovery is that the fish, from chrome bright to
slightly colored, were all coming in on the tides. I think this is a
factor of how little time coastal spring fish can spend in
freshwater–some of them are ready to roll the minute they come in. Every
fish pictured here had sea lice, regardless of color or maturity.
While Yvon was old-schooling ’em with floating line and tiny comet (at
one point, as the tide filled a pool and the current quit, he went full
Bill Schaadt with a shooting head and slow-strip retrieve to hook a fish
after I’d quit), I followed up swinging a bit of a sink-tip and joined
the fun.
And then, we were back to work, hoping the tide had brought in more
shiny presents. Awesome. Stay tuned for more from the BC Coast…

Nation’s Leading Sportsmen’s Organizations Urge Specific Protections for Bristol Bay, Alaska
Posted on April 14 2015
From TRCP:
Eighteen of the top sportsmen’s groups in the United States penned a letter to leading appropriators in Congress supporting the swift completion of the EPA’s process to protect Bristol Bay from Pebble Mine development. Signed by the Dallas Safari Club, Boone and Crockett Club, National Wild Turkey Federation, Wildlife Forever, and others, the letter is addressed to Senators Thad Cochran (R-MS) and Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Representatives Hal Rogers (R-KY) and Nita Lowey (D-NY)—the chairmen and ranking members of the Senate and House Appropriations Committees. The letter makes it abundantly clear that men and women who hunt and fish care deeply about protecting Bristol Bay.
“Sportsmen and women in Alaska and across the U.S. have rallied to the defense of Bristol Bay, a world-class hunting and fishing destination with some of the best habitat for brown bears, moose, caribou, and salmon in the country,” says Whit Fosburgh, president and CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. “The residents and business owners of Alaska have waited more than a decade for resolution of this issue, and the process must be concluded quickly. That is why we urge Congress to let the process continue.”

Utah Stream Access Coalition – Weber Case Ruling
Posted on April 13 2015
From USAC:
Today is an historic day for Utahans and, in particular, the members of USAC. This afternoon, Judge Keith Kelly of Utah’s 3rd District Court ruled in favor of the Utah Stream Access Coalition and confirmed that the Weber River is navigable where it crosses over the landowner defendant’s properties.
In the 26-page decision, the Court acknowledged the statehood-era use of the Weber River to float logs from the headwaters in the Uinta Mountains downstream to Wanship and Echo where they were taken out and used for such commercial purposes such as construction of railroads, prop timbers for Park City mines, saw timbers and cordwood. These drives played a “significant role in developing the railroad and mining industries in northern Utah and the surrounding region” wrote Judge Kelly.
Many, many individuals contributed to fighting for our rights, and we thank you for what you’ve done. In particular, we express our deep gratitude to our counsel on this case, Cullen Battle and Craig Coburn, who masterfully wove the history and the law into a strong, cohesive cloth.
Although the ruling has been filed, that doesn’t mean the Weber is “open for business.” We’re still awaiting further details on precisely where the public can access and use the Weber, and there is still some legal legwork that must be done behind the scenes, so don’t go grabbing your rod and reel quite yet. We expect those answers in the coming weeks.
When the time does come, we want to remind you of these very important points:
