Sportsmen groups praise creation of Browns Canyon national monument

From TU:
Colorado sportsmen today praised President Obama’s designation of Browns Canyon as a new national monument, the culmination of years of effort to protect a Colorado backcountry treasure beloved by generations of anglers, hunters, rafters, and hikers.
Gov. John Hickenlooper and Sen. Michael Bennet recently asked President Obama to use his authority under the Antiquities Act to establish the 22,000-acre Browns Canyon National Monument, after legislation sponsored by Sen. Mark Udall stalled in Congress despite broad local support.
Sportsmen and wildlife enthusiasts called the monument action a historic victory for Colorado conservation.
“I’m thrilled,” said Jim Impara, vice president of the Collegiate Peaks Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Salida. “Browns Canyon is one of those special places that draws rafters, hunters and anglers from all over the world. This action ensures that Browns’ wildness and rare beauty will be there for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.”
“Those of us who have rafted, hunted and fished Browns Canyon for years know what a gem it is. People come from all over the country for the whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River. It’s habitat for mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep and raptors and offers some of the best fishing in the region,” said Bill Dvorak, a longtime rafting guide and public lands organizer for the National Wildlife Federation. “The designation has been a long time coming and the community, hunters, anglers and Coloradans overall are grateful this stunning landscape will be conserved.”
“This is a great day for
Outdoor Industry Leaders Thank Secretary Jewell for Arctic Refuge Protection
Posted on February 18 2015
From OIA:
February 18, 2015 – Outdoor Industry Association® (OIA) and industry leaders representing more than four dozen outdoor businesses have signed on to a thank-you letter sent to Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell for recent proposals of Wilderness designation for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This would be the first Wilderness designation for a refuge that a president will have recommended to Congress since 1974.
The outdoor industry supports more than six million American jobs, generates $646 billion in direct consumer spending and contributes $80 billion in federal, state and local taxes. In Alaska, outdoor recreation generates $9.5 billion in consumer spending, supports 92,000 jobs and generates $711 million in state and local tax revenue.
While the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge does not receive the number of visitations seen at other iconic American landscapes like the Grand Canyon or Yosemite Valley, it stands on equal ground with these spectacular, long-protected areas when it comes to recreation. Visitors to the Refuge can view a multitude of wildlife, raft some of the wildest rivers on Earth, fish for Arctic char, and literally backpack and ski for hundreds of miles.
In addition to its outstanding recreation opportunities, it provides
1,200-Plus Coalition Members Call on Congress to Boost Federal Conservation Funding
Posted on February 18 2015
From TRCP:
A diverse and growing coalition representing more than 1,200 groups dedicated to balanced natural resources policy today urged congressional leaders to implement a 2-percent increase in funding for key conservation, outdoors and historic preservation programs in fiscal year 2016.
America’s Voice for Conservation, Recreation and Preservation issued its request following two years of level funding for coalition priorities provided by the Murray-Ryan Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013. In budgets being considered for FY 2016, natural resource conservation, outdoor recreation and historic preservation programs could be subject to disproportionate cuts – an outcome that the AVCRP coalition is committed to avoiding.
Since the late 1970s, federal funding in conservation, outdoors and historic preservation has fallen from roughly 2 percent of the federal budget to 1 percent. In the last six years, congressional investment in natural resource conservation has failed to keep pace with inflation. While these increasingly scarce dollars have been leveraged with some success by philanthropic and corporate donors, America’s ability to conserve natural resources that maintain water quality, protect coastlines, sustain economic opportunities and maintain access to outdoor recreation will continue to have diminishing returns.
In a letter to Senate and House leaders of both parties, the coalition stated,
