When Swift Fly Fishing released their 7'9" ten weight "Bandit" blank I really didn't know what to expect. Would it be a chopped down Epic 990? Would it be heavy? Would it be capable? What I did know was that I was intrigued.

On South Andros, our guides often refer to big bonefish as ‘blackbacks.’ Why? Because big bonefish, like the double digit critters we all dream about, often appear much darker in the water than smaller bonefish. Located 1,300 miles south of Hawaii, Kiritimati (or Christmas Island), is on the bucket list for many recreational anglers. Recently, Dr. Andy
Danylchuk, Patagonia Fly Fishing Ambassador, and a group of colleagues and
dedicated anglers traveled to Kiritimati to conduct ground breaking
research on giant trevally and bonefish - research that will form the
basis of scientifically-based best practices for catch-and-release of
these prized species. On his trips, Andy likes to get a fresh
perspective of the flats and other aquatic habitats from high above the
waterline, like in this image of the iconic Paris flats - an important
movement corridor for bonefish as they prepare to spawn. Only once we
get a view from above do we realize how little we really are.

The Outdoor Industry Association Sustainability Working Group (OIA SWG) presented its third annual Individual Contribution Awards during Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2015 last month in Salt Lake City. Todd Copeland and Jason Duncan were recognized for their dedication to the outdoor industry’s chemicals management efforts.
Todd Copeland, Environmental Responsibility Manager at Patagonia, currently serves as the chair of the OIA Chemicals Management Working Group (CMWG). Over the past three years under his leadership, the CMWG has grown to around 150 members. It has established itself as the leading open collaborative effort for apparel, footwear, gear and accessories brands, retailers and suppliers to develop and implement chemicals management best practices in the supply chain. Since its establishment in 2011, the CMWG has developed and launched the Chemicals Management Module (CMM) of the Higg Index, facilitated opportunities to learn about chemicals of concern and pending legislation and become the go-to place to engage with peers in the industry who are working on the same issues.
“I’m very grateful to OIA for this recognition. The time I spend working with the Chemicals Management Working Group is really rewarding in itself,” said Copeland, “I am constantly learning from the members and I’m inspired by how many companies are constantly pushing the envelope to solve the chemical challenges we face as an industry.”

BioLite LLC, an innovator in off-grid energy solutions, has announced its bold entry into the lighting category with the new NanoGrid, a compact, powerful system of rechargeable lighting and power storage.
“Light and power are at the center of our homes, giving us the ability to see, connect, and do,” said Jonathan Cedar, BioLite Co-founder and CEO. “Inspired by home energy access, we wanted to create an off-grid solution that empowers users to share their energy across devices. With the NanoGrid, you can create functional task lighting, illuminate multiple environments at once, or charge personal devices whenever you need it – it’s up to you.”
The foundation of the NanoGrid system is the PowerLight, the pocket-sized rechargeable power bank, lantern and torch. A compact energy hub, its 4400 mAh Li-Ion battery can be recharged from any USB source – including BioLite’s CampStove, BaseCamp and KettleCharge – and then used to share power with any USB-chargeable gear.
One of the PowerLight’s greatest innovations is in its custom edge-lit technology. The unique design of the

Today, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) released “Our Public Lands-Not for Sale”, detailing how the proposed transfer, or sale, of America’s federal public lands would negatively affect sportsmen and women in the United States. A growing number of western state legislators and federal elected officials are advocating for the transfer or all out sale of federal public lands. This report highlights how these ideas are nothing new and if they come to pass, how detrimental they would be to America’s sportsmen and women, ultimately resulting in loss of access to quality habitat for hunting and fishing.
The report also illustrates the incredible potential harm to both the outdoor business community and sportsmen and women. More than two thirds of hunters in the 11 Western states depend on public lands for all or part of their hunting, including both resident and non-resident hunters. And, outdoor recreation supports $646 billion in revenue and 6.1 million jobs annually.
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is 100% against the transfer, or sale, of our federal public lands. While we think that federal land management could be improved, this is no time to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We look forward to working with elected officials from both sides
