Cuba Changes… I Wonder
Posted on December 30 2014
So President Obama, at the urging of Pope Francis, and with the obvious buy-in from Raul Castro (why not?) has decided to fast-track normalization of relations between the Washington and Havana.
Frankly, in the grand economic scheme, that’s probably a windfall for America, as Yankee exports will far out-strip the influx of quality cigars, or rum, or anything else Cuba has to offer.
But there is this tiny niche consideration of fly fishing, and the fact that gringo anglers will soon have some of the best saltwater flats in the Western Hemisphere available to them. Thing is, one must wonder whether or not the bounty that awaits is “all that,” and more importantly, if Cuba itself is ready to handle the impending influx.
On the one hand, Cuba fishing has been wide-open for years, for everyone but American anglers, and many of them have even made the trek, if off the legal radar. It’s not that those fish and those flats haven’t seen flies ever before. On the other hand,
Retailer Poll: Help Us Help You by Answering the Following

How launching an online marketing campaign is like exploring new water for the first time – Part 1.
Posted on December 30 2014

Launching a marketing plan and fishing a new stream have a lot more in common than you might think. To be successful in both requires a ton of research, lots of hard work, and a willingness to reach outside your comfort zone.
Understand what you’re fishing for.
The first step in scoping out new water is understanding what kind of fish may live below. Loading up your fly box with streamers won’t do you much good if the stream is full of rising brook trout. The same can be said for your marketing campaign. You need to understand who your customers are and what they are biting on. At a minimum, spend time looking at

End of 2014 Bristol Bay / Pebble Mine Status Report
Posted on December 30 2014
Scott Hed – Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska
There have been a few major developments in the long-running campaign to protect the world’s most productive wild salmon fishery as 2014 draws to a close.
First, a quick refresher to get caught up. Over a multi-year period, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted the Bristol Bay Watershed Assessment (BBWA) – a study of the values currently found in the Bristol Bay region as well as the potential risks to those values from proposed large-scale mining development such as the Pebble Mine project. The BBWA involved 2 rounds of public comment and 2 rounds of peer review by an independent panel of expert scientists. It concluded that large-scale mining would have significant negative impacts on the waters and lands that support the largest wild salmon runs on earth – something that the fishing community has known all along.
