Cortland introduces John Wilson as new president
Posted on June 22 2015
From Cortland:
For more than two decades John Wilson successfully led a split existence. By day, he captained operations and guided change at construction, sustainable energy and consulting companies. Outside the office, he earned a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and skilled fly fishermen and guides in America. Now Wilson is marrying his passion and his profession as the new president of Cortland Line Company.
Wilson, who joined Cortland earlier this year as the companys executive manager, promises renewed focus and energized innovation for the company as it celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2015.
The fly fishing industry has changed dramatically in recent years, Wilson said, but ultimately we have to
Utah Stream Access Coalition: Weber Case Update
Posted on June 22 2015
From USAC:
It’s official – the Weber/Navigability case has been appealed by the landowner defendants to the Utah Supreme Court. We still don’t have specific dates yet, but our rough timeline is as follows: briefs completed by September-October 2015; oral arguments by April-May 2016; and decision by October-November 2016. It is our hope that the high court of the State will uphold Judge Kelly’s decision, and open the door for similar rulings on other rivers in Utah.
For USAC’s official interpretation of the Weber Ruling, please see our Fact Sheet.
In the meantime, USAC counsel is preparing for trial on the Provo/Right-to-Use case August 26-28, Sept 2-3.
Legislative Update
With two district court rulings in hand by the time the legislative session convenes in late January 2016, it is our hope that they will resolve the dispute, and define the easement, with fair and balanced legislation.
Summer is the ideal time to get in touch with your Representative and Senator, as their schedules are much lighter than during the session. Take 5 minutes, and get in touch with your legislators THIS WEEK.

Bahamas Flats Fishing Proposal Creates Alarm
Posted on June 22 2015
Last Wednesday, the government of the Bahamas released a proposal for new regulations that would change the way anglers, lodges and visitors can participate in fishing-related activities on the flats. The broad reach of the regulation scope, as well as the limited amount of time allowed for commenting—less than two weeks, has raised a stir among many fishing tourism operators and lodges. Particularly notable is the language targeting non-Bahamian guides and visiting do-it-yourselfers, as well as any lodges or fishing operations with foreign ownership.

BlackStrap Industries joins Trout Unlimited as a corporate partner
Posted on June 19 2015
From TU:
BlackStrap industries, developer and manufacturer of American-made UV protection gear, has joined Trout Unlimited as a corporate partner, and will offer free new TU memberships to customers purchasing select BlackStrap gear.
“What we’re really trying to do is create a new line of USA-made products with superior functionality that helps anglers go ‘full circle’ when it comes to the gear they use,” said Abe Shehadeh, CEO of Bend, Ore.,-based BlackStrap Industries. “By using BlackStrap gear, anglers can contribute to the conservation of trout and salmon habitat we all depend on when we go fishing.”
The idea of “full circle” begins with BlackStrap’s partners. Retailers and shops are getting a quality American-made product they can sell with confidence to their customers, Shehedeh explained. That value is then passed down to the customers, along with a free membership to Trout Unlimited. Lastly, BlackStrap benefits with knowing the end user is wearing a made-for TU product, and they’re now a part of the TU community that’s helping protect and restore America’s trout waters.
“That’s what we mean when we talk about the ‘full circle.’”

Sportsmen Get Shortchanged in Congressional Budgeting Process
Posted on June 19 2015
From Backcountry Hunters & Anglers:
The federal appropriations process currently underway in both houses of Congress includes numerous provisions that sportsmen – and other citizens who value healthy fish and wildlife habitat, accessible outdoors opportunities and clean water – have reason to criticize, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers announced today.
The House Appropriations Committee met this morning to consider its spending bill for fiscal year 2016. In keeping with the blueprint unveiled by a subcommittee last week, the bill slashes funding for the Interior Department and Environmental Protection Agency and would hamstring priority programs for sportsmen. Critics were quick to condemn the committee’s “shortsighted” approach.
“Given the House budget bill released last week, we were prepared for the results of today’s markup,” said BHA Executive Director Land Tawney. “Yet the ramifications of the House budget are sobering. This bill would systematically dismantle measures that have been key to our continued ability to enjoy and access our outdoor traditions – those handed down by generations of Americans. This shortsighted approach fails to serve the interests of the vast majority of American citizens.”
Specific components of the House FY 2016 budget are as follow:
Maine Artist Enters Distinctive Home Market with Glassware Designed for Anglers
Posted on June 19 2015
From Karen Talbot Art:
Karen Talbot Art announced an August delivery date for the first products in her new line of quality, affordable glassware designed with anglers in mind: the Angler’s Pint and Classic Fly Jigger. Both products merge everyday functionality and price with the award-winning art of artist and angler Karen Talbot. The Angler’s Pint and Classic Fly Jigger were launched with the support of a crowd-funding campaign that reached its fundraising goal in four days, proving both the concept and the price-point appeal to the target audience.
“While my hand-painted glassware sells well,” says Talbot, “the price-point limits the audience. The goal with the Angler’s Pints and Classic Fly Jiggers is to reproduce my artwork on quality glassware at an affordable price. I’m thrilled with the response, and I look forward to expanding the line soon.”
