The high, muddy and warm (yes, warm) water being released from Cannonsville has adversly affected the fishing. So has the low, clear and until the last few days, warm water in the East Branch. Has all that changed? No!. The WB is still high, dirty and warm....

Well, I finally got my rainy day. It was a perfect "olive kind of day", starting with a foggy mist and then a light rain on and off all day. I was on the river by nine thirty and pretty much fished all day.
The DEP had dropped the WB flow to 300 cfs in anticipation of the predicted rain so I fished several places in the lower WB as well as two places on the big river.

With all of the weather forecasts calling for substantial rain this week both the DEP and I took action. DEP cut the WB flow down below 300 cfs and I (with a good many items crossed off my "Honey do" list at home) headed back down to the river.

It's always the question on the Delaware system and after two weeks away touring the western part of the country, I didn't have a clue. Opened up the camp and was ready to fish a little after three.

With the West Branch being bumped up another seventy five cfs to meet minimum flow requirements there is little likelihood of good surface activity again today. To add insult to injury the weatherman is predicting ninety degree temps for the area on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I know trico spinners fall at sixty nine degrees. Yesterday it was foggy and sixty one when I got up. Two hours later it was still foggy and sixty one. With the lawn mower fixed and the lawn cut, There was no excuse for not taking a trico trip. So I did. It wasn't cold but there was heavy fog and until it burned off the temp hung in the low 60's. Had to forego my trico fishing this morning and attempt to fix the lawn mower. Monday when I was cutting the grass a tree root I have mowed over for twenty years took revenge and bent both blades. The water beneath the thermocline has been depleted (in part because of the three weeks of 1,500 cfs during the drawdown). It's been three weeks since the flow was cut back to five hundred in the WB and one hundred forty in the EB. No there wasn't a frost. It wasn't really that cold (53 here), but the sun took it's sweet time burning through the fog and when it did it didn't do much of a job warming things up. My trico fishing which one day last week started at seven am, didn't get going until after ten ( most of the spinners don't fall until the temp approaches seventy) and it lasted until almost two. The weatherman is calling for no rain over the next ten days with temps climbing into the high eighties early next week.The tributaries are very low and the two year classes of trout residing in them are at increased risk from predators. The trico hatch is in full swing and pods of as many as fifty fish are

After three days off for our anniversary weekend I returned to the
river hoping to make up for lost time. It didn't work out that way.
The day started out hot and humid and from a cloudless sky
thunderheads suddenly appeared. The thunderstorms that followed cut
short my attempt to fish on the way down and then kept me pinned in
the camp (without power) 'til after three.

Bright sun in an almost cloudless sky is not what fishermen pray for.

Gave the upper EB Tricos a whirl again this morning. Will wait 'til

In the afternoon I stopped at Joe Foster's (a long time Troutfitter

With the variation in the water levels we have had in the WB this
summer finding bugs and rising fish often times requires a visit to
the local fortune teller. Yesterday there was a modest afternoon hatch
of sulfurs up top. It was over by five o'clock. At five thirty, when

Word has gotten around that the WB is down to under five hundred cfs
and anglers have arrived to make up for time lost during the spill and
drawdown of Cannonsville. The upper EB had numerous fishermen
lookingfor Tricos this morning. The upper WB where the sulfurs have

Went out early this morning looking for Tricos on the upper EB. There
weren't any but what I did find was a nice hatch of size sixteen
olives. The hatch increased as the morning went along and the fish did
their best not to let any get off the water. In their eagerness they

Weather Underground says it was 94 in Hancock today. I don't believe
it. I had two shirts on and when I got in the car at 8:30 I had to
turn the heater on. When I got to the camp the thermostat said 80
degrees. It felt good. Why? Because I spent five hours wading the ice
cold WB casting to rising trout. Was it worth it? Um, yes.

Wife on the way home from our daughters, fridge empty and laundry bag
full. Time to head home and get the rest of my life in order.
With the bug bonanza produced by the big releases in both branches,
this was one of the best ten day runs of dry fly fishing in recent

Today was a carbon copy of yesterday minus the morning trip.
For the full fishing report reread paragraphs 2 & 3 of yesterdays
report. Hooked exactly the same number of fish but landed four more.
Catch included the brown and rainbow attached.

Went out a little after two to take on the sulfur sippers. They won.

and the fish don't get into a rhythm eating them. Fish don't like to

upper EB, Long flat's 4 cars was topped by the 5 at the power line
pool. The big EB had one or two fishermen in every pool I could see in
my wanderings. There were four cars in the upper game lands lot and a
pickup truck at the lower gamelands lot.

day. On the best day this week the water temp on the WB hit a high of
49. There were a plethora of bugs and the fish fed like crazy. Today
the water temp was 50 degrees, the hatch was sparse and the fish

had walked a long way up stream. The bugs were just starting, sulfurs

Leaky dam and high water bring bugs

After seeing yesterdays bug bonanza on the upper EB there was no
mystery in which stream I would fish today. I was at the river at 2:30
ready for the fun to begin.
The first olives, sulfurs and isos were on the water by 3:00 and an
ever increasing number of sulfurs and isos followed. The sun must
have affected the olives as their numbers were much below that of
yesterday.
The fish? Never showed....

Water, water everywhere

They maxed out the release at 1620cfs at Cannonsville in conjunction
with a problem that occurred at the construction site of the new
electric generator. I am going to a meeting tomorrow to find out more
about it and will post what I learn here.
It often takes both the fish and bugs a day or so to adjust to a big
release increase so I decided to head in the other direction.

During the drilling of test holes for the proposed hydro-electric
project a bore hole went into an underground stream of water that has
apparently been flowing under the dam since it's construction. The
DEP has long been aware of the water flow which has previously shown
up in an artesian well a short distance below the dam. The bore hole
has given the water a new release point closer to the dam. The...
