Angler 119's Delaware River Fishing Report

It was a delightful day. Why? Because I spent from 1:30 until 7:30 standing in 50 degree water. Even had the heater on in the car heading back to the Lordville Estate. Several showers went around us, one even sent me scrambling back to the car for my raincoat. Tomorrow is predicted to be another scorcher with some relief coming over the weekend.  An interesting day to be sure. Was greeted this morning by a bat that hopefully entered during the night through the wide open porch slider. Spent the day in the house and was looking for a way out when I got home tonight. It is 85 in here right now (a camp record) and the sliding door is going to be open again tonight. The porch is screened in but there are gaps between the roof and the beams.

 Even Jean who loves the heat said it's too hot. For me the last three weeks were just the way I like it, cool enough during the day to do a little yard work without being drenched in sweat and with nighttime temps in the low 50's, it's been great for sleeping. Tonight it's 80 again inside the LVE and 77 on the thermometer out on the porch. Gonna be a hot night.

Things got into a routine this week. The afternoon sulfurs have become quite regular, with the hatch starting right around noon. They have hatched in good enough numbers in the upper few miles of the WB to get most of the fish up and feeding. If you go, know that it will be crowded. It's four am in the morning.  Was just awakened by a tractor trailer backing down the road outside the bedroom window.  Warren Road is a dead end and there is no place on it for a big rig to turn around. After four days of beautiful, cool, dry weather the rivers are returning to more normal levels. Both the Willowemoc and Beaverkill can be comfortably waded. The water temps there have been fine for fishing but we are in the hottest week (on average) of the year. Wade fishermen, just stay home.  There is no place for you to fish safely at current water levels. 

Even if you have a boat you should stay off the rivers until flow rates subside. An accident at current water levels can turn into a tragedy. Spent the morning waiting for the grass to dry so I could mow it. Takes longer to mow right now because I have to remove 15 support poles that are keeping the peach tree limbs mostly out of reach of the deer. When I'm done mowing I have to prop everything back up again.  The deer are up in the woods watching in hopes that I forget and leave everything down where they can reach it.

Someone please tell me why NYC did not, (and still has not) maximized the releases from both reservoirs a week ago. The water flowing into the reservoirs currently far exceeds the amount by which they can be drawn down even with maximum releases. After a night of heavy thunderstorms that blew out everything but the upper reaches of the two branches, there wasn't much question as to where both the wade fishermen and the drifters would go. With the yard still wet from last nights rain I was unable to cross the yardwork items off my to-do list. Copied some flies that appeared on my screens last night and at about 1:30, loaded up the trash and headed for the transfer station. In order for the fishing to be good three things have to happen. The fisherman has to be in the right place at the right time. I wasn't. The bugs have to show up via either a hatch or a spinner fall. They didn't. The fish have to rise. They didn't.

Perhaps I was too far downstream for the evening sulfurs (the gamelands) but there were swallows eating spinners way up high before the last rain.

 Got the Lordville Estate down to 71 degrees at 6:00 yesterday morning then closed things up and watched the thermometer out on the porch climb into the mid nineties. At noon Mom had a coming out party for her fawn. It's the first one I've seen in Lordville so far this year. Have yet to see a doe with twin fawns. Both the bears and coyotes are grim reapers and have been busy thinning the heard.
